Alright, who wants to talk placentas?

It's strange that in this modern world that we are often afraid to talk about things that need to be talked about. That we feel ashamed to talk about things that we should be talking to each other about. One of those things is postpartum depression. Thousands and thousands of women suffer from it every year, yet, it still somehow remains taboo to many people.

Let's put this out here; I have suffered from depression in my life. I am not ashamed to talk about it.

I have dealt with depression twice in my life. Once was soon after I graduated from high school. The second time was soon after Ian was born. We'll focus on that.

Right after Ian was born, I felt weepy. I didn't like being alone, but I felt alone anyway. I thought that most of it would go away after the first few days, but it didn't. No matter what I did, or how happy I was, I felt intrusive and depressing thoughts attacking me. I had this perfect little boy in front of me, whom I loved with all of my heart, but still, I was unhappy.

After dealing with several months of this, I decided that it was time to go back and talk to my doctor about starting a regimen of antidepressants again. Soon, I began to feel better. But they always came along with their unwanted side effects. One of which is something many people describe as "brain zaps". It's basically something where everytime you blink, especially is you blink slowly, you feel this weird "zap" feeling in your head, right behind your eyes and in the top of your head. You wouldn't understand unless you have felt it.

After several months of weaning myself back off of the medication, I was med free again and doing very well for a long time. It's a learning process. You have to find out what works for you. A couple of months later, I conceived Vanessa-Kate.

I was overjoyed to be pregnant again. But realistically I knew that there was a very good chance that I would once again experience postpartum depression. While I am glad that antidepressants were there when I needed them, I hoped to never have to use them again. I didn't like the idea that I had to put something like that into my body just to feel normal again. I started searching for other options.

That's when I came across a post on a message board that I frequent. It was about placenta encapsulation. At first I was extremely put-off. For those of you who don't know, the placenta is an organ that connects the developing fetus to the uterine wall to allow nutrient uptake, waste elimination, and gas exchange via the mother's blood supply. Having your placenta encapsulized entails having it taken after birth, boiled, left in a dehydrator overnight, and then ground up and put into capsules, like vitamins.

Feel free to stop here if you feel grossed out, but I urge you to read on.

Lots of people know about the benefits of the placenta. Animals often eat it after they give birth because it is filled with nutrients that are wonderful for a the mothers recovering body. It also helps the mothers body to produce more milk. Every mothers placenta is different and is perfectly designed for her body. In other cultures, the placenta is eaten by the entire community in special stews and soups. In some cultures it is dried and smoked. Many people bury theirs near a special plant because it is so full of nutrients that it helps plants to flourish.

But I was in no way, shape, or form interested in eating my placenta. Ugh. Turns out, neither are most women in our culture. However, once I considered the idea of having my placenta made into capsules, I started to really warm up to the idea. Considering what is inside of many of the capsules that we take as medication...my own placenta didn't sound so bad. And I was willing to try just about anything to avoid postpartum depression again.

That's when I met Kelsi Meyers at a baby convention. Kelsi works with placenta benefits, which is the leading educator and provider of placenta services. Kelsi has four kids of her own. We chatted, and I decided to give it a try. Three days after Vanessa-Kate's birth Kelsi came to my home and prepared my placenta. Twenty-Four hours later I had 140 capsules. She made me very comfortable with the entire process and way truly a joy to work with.

So, 7 weeks postpartum, how am I feeling?

The short answer is amazing. I am so far from PPD that it's not even funny. I had the "baby blues" and felt kind of weepy for 4 or 5 days after I had her. But since I started taking the capsules, I feel like I'm on top of the world. I honestly feel better than I have in my entire life. I spent $150, less than one months worth of my antidepressants would have cost to have this done...and I wholeheartedly believe it was the best money I have ever spent. You just can't put a price on being able to truly enjoy the first few months of your childs life without the overshadowing of PPD. My energy level is through the roof. I'm actually doing better than just surviving through the sleepless nights, I'm thriving. It's not something that is just for women who fear PPD. It's for all sorts of good reasons; a better energy level, a faster recovery, help with milk production, and fighting off the "baby blues".

Motherhood has made me so much more open to more natural life choices. Before I had Ian, I could care less about what I was putting into my body. But since that time I have found the value of more natural options; organic foods and body products, all natural remedies, chiropractic care (that's another post though), a drug free childbirth and, alas, placenta encapsulation. Holy moly, I think you might even be able to call me "crunchy" these days.

I will most certainly be having this done again next time, and I urge my readers to look farther into it. As I said, I was very put-off at first, but after talking with so many others ladies that have had such a good experience, and learning more about the process, I took a chance.

If you are interested in having your placenta encapsulized in the Columbus/Central Ohio area, please consider
Kelsi Meyers.

If you would like to find a provider in your area or simply learn more about the benefits of the placenta, visit

I'm so very happy that I took a chance on this, you could be too. =)

Update: I exclusively pumped breastmilk for Vanessa-Kate until she was about 4.5 months old. No matter how hard my lactation consultant and I tried, she did not latch well or for long periods of time. So I pumped, and I pumped, and I pumped some more. I really believe the capsules helped me to keep up my milk supply. But at 4.5 months, I decided to try to get Vanessa-Kate to latch. After some hard times, we got there. I breastfeed full time now. But right after I stopped pumping my milk took a bit of a dive. I took a few capsules again (I had stopped taking them at that point) and my milk bounced back up within 24 hours. Amazing.

15 Weeks in Pictures:

I used to do pregnancy updates every Monday. It still feels kind of strange not to be doing them every week. I would have been exactly one week overdue today if I were still pregnant. (Thank God I'm not!).

Anyway, so this Monday I decided to show you all of the last 15 weeks of my pregnancy all in one picture. It's amazing how much the body changes in such a short period of time, isn't it?

Week 36

Current Week: 36

Weeks to go: 4-ish. Okay, let's take the time to explain this. My due date is 4 weeks (28 days) from today. However, I will be induced during the 39th week (whatever day my OB is on hospital duty that week) if I have not yet had her. So that means 3-3.5 weeks. However, I have the feeling she will arrive before that. I'm still sticking with July 15th.

Weight gain: Not sure..13 lbs?

Stretchies: Just some leftovers.

Movement: Yes. It hurts.

Cravings: Eh.

Sleep: Horrible.

Best moment this week: Spending the long 4th of July weekend with family. =)

Gender: Girly-girl.

Labor signs: Yes. I won't go into detail though. It's kind-sorta icky for those who have never been pregnant. =P

Belly button: Flatish innie?

What I miss: Not having heartburn, not peeing every 2 seconds, sleeping.

What I'm looking forward to: This entire week; The town fair Wednesday-Friday, which takes place literally right in front of our house, my doctor appointment (with first cervix check) on Wednesday, Chiropractor on Thursday (I missed my weekly appointment and I'm hurting!) and then the lake (assuming I'm not WAY dilated) Friday night-Monday!

Weekly wisdom: Yep.

Milestones: I officially feel as big as a house. Is that a milestone?

Pinch me?

I think that I am headed towards a super hard crash into reality.

You see, the fact is that I don't actually believe that I'm going to have a baby, at least not anytime soon. There is no denying that I am nearly full term. I walk around the house organizing baby clothes and cleaning nooks and crannies because the overly logical side of me knows that she's coming...soon. I complain about my back pain, and I stand up very slowly from the sitting position since it feels like if I move too quickly a baby just might try to make it's way out of me (sorry!), but the fact of the matter is this; I am in denial.

It's not that I don't want to have another child. I desperately do. It's just that for some reason I cannot wrap my mind around the idea that it is actually going to happen. I have the same feeling that I had in the planning stages of all of this; like we are still discussing whether it is the right time to start trying to conceive. I feel like we actually have to make a decision about whether we are going to have another baby or not. I don't know whats wrong with me.

When I got pregnant with Ian, it came as a happy surprise. While we had married younger than most, we weren't really planning on jumping right into a family. I was looking forward to spending at least the next two years as "just the two of us". But, alas, 2 short months into our marriage and three days before Christmas, my family doctor delivered the news; "No, you do not have the stomach flu, you are pregnant."

My initial response was to stop breathing for a moment. I think I may have uttered out the words "Holy shit". However it was soon followed with shock, and then joy. Overall, I was happy. When I shared the news with Toby, so was he. Though when I gave him a baggie with a biohazard sign on it with the test in it from the doctors office he thought that it was my way of telling him that there was something terribly, horribly wrong with me. ::giggles:: Silly boy.

But, as much of a surprise my pregnancy was, I embraced it. It felt very real to me the whole time. Mostly, I was very aware of the end result; I was going to be a mother, and I was going to give birth to a baby. Never once did that not seem real to me as it does this time. It's just ironic that it only seems unreal when it's planned.

I thought that these feelings would go away as I became larger. No such luck. There are 34 days until our baby is "due", which means less time than that. If she hasn't arrived yet, I'll be induced sometime in the week before that, which means 27-33 days from now. But, I can almost promise you that it will be sooner. I feel it. I have been convinced that she is coming on July 15th this entire time. Which is 17 days from now. Whoa. (P.S. While I'm making predictions, let's go ahead and throw this out there; 6 lbs, 11 oz, 20 inches long)

Maybe I'm just nervous about changing my little family. While we are all super excited to meet Vanessa-Kate, there is just so much new to be experienced. What will it be like to have a newborn and a toddler? What is it like to be a parent of two? For that matter, what is it like to be the parent of a girl? I'm pretty sure I know nothing about taking care of little girls. Will Ian be happy? Will he feel deserted? Mostly, the question that I believe every second time Mother-to-be asks herself; Will I be able to love another child nearly as much as I love the first?

I will. I know. But, sometimes it's hard to know until it happens. It's going to happen very soon.

Week 35

Current Week: 35

Weeks to go: 5-ish (I swear she's coming July 15th though)

Weight gain: Not sure..13 lbs?

Stretchies: My old ones that had all but faded away from Ian's pregnancy are starting to pink up again. =( Noooo.

Movement: I feel like she's throwing a lot of dead weight around inside of me.

Cravings: Food. Lots and lots of FOOD.

Sleep: As crappy as to be expected.

Best moment this week: Buying the cradle with Toby. =)

Gender: Girly-girl.

Labor signs: Some contractions and an ungodly amount of pressure down low. Ahh.

Belly button: Flatish innie?

What I miss: Sleeping.

What I'm looking forward to: The weekend.

Weekly wisdom: If something is special, treat it that way.

Milestones: Today is my "35/35". 35 Weeks, and 35 days until our due date.

So, it's been a long day. Firstly, we have not had hot water in our apartment since Friday, and it won't be back on until Thursday morning. Apparently the gas company shut off the gas even though *we* have never been late on a bill in our lives. Then, our car broke down today while we were on the way to Toby's Mom's house so that we could shower without freezing our asses off. I guess it's a pretty cheap fix, but the part is impossible to find. There are literally none in the state. So I have to wait for a dealership to order it, which could take forever.

So, yeah. I look awesome in these pictures.

It's time for an update.

I feel like lately I haven't had the time to write about things as they happen. And I certainly haven't had the time to share all of the little things. Mostly it's because I started back to school after my wonderful quarter off and I have just been getting back into the swing of things.

So, let's start with Ian;

He's getting big, way too big. I feel like he has really been developing like crazy over these last few months. He already had a large vocabulary, but it seems like he is really grasping the idea of really being able to communicate what he is thinking. He lets me know when he wants/needs something, and sometimes he even *tries* to tell me about his day. He will randomly speak a couple words about something that he really enjoyed doing earlier in the day. He has also taken up calling people "nut". As in "You're a nut!". It's pretty much the cutest thing that I've ever seen.

He's starting to really enjoy eating as well. He has been eating lots of turkey. Ungodly amounts of turkey. He's getting taller (still!) and he's sleeping in a big boy bed. He is also taking a large amount of interest in Vanessa-Kate's things as they start to fill up the house. He likes to hug all of her things and lovingly say "Baaabbby". He gives her lots of kisses at night and tells her "Hiiiiiiiiii!" in the morning. He's going to make a wonderful big brother. I can't wait to see it in action.

And now onto Vanessa-Kate/Pregnancy;

Things are going smoothly. I had my regularly scheduled OB appointment (with my amazingly wonderful and sweet new doctor) today. The first surprise..? I passed my gestational diabetes test with flying colors! This is truly a miracle since I had GD with Ian and 85% or more of women who have GD once will have it again with all of the following pregnancies. My OB says that most of this is due to my wonderful weight gain, or lack thereof. I've been watching my diet closely and taking care of myself well.

The next thing that she checked was my cervix. I know that 25 weeks is early to check, but I dilated very early and fast with Ian, and I also had a long week full of contractions last week. But, thank the lord, my cervix is completely closed. No signs of early labor here! Keep cooking baby girl!

Lastly, she had a beautiful heartbeat of over 150 bpm. I have another appointment scheduled in 3 weeks and then we move to appointments every 2 weeks! Wow! This pregnancy is flying by. I'm getting more and more excited to meet her. It's all really sinking in. Maybe it's because my house is filled with little girl stuff. =)

Lastly a Family/General Update;

I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but Toby got an awesome promotion. We are so very proud of him. This promotion is a really great step forward for our family. He has worked really hard for it.

We've gone "healthy" in our house. We've been eating well, with lots of organic foods, fruits and veggies, whole grains, lean meats, almond milk, tofu, and lots of other good stuff. Tobys only rule? We still have to buy white bread. Our house is filled with healthy foods and a lousy loaf of $1.00 Kroger-Brand white bread. I suppose that we'll survive.

Also, we're finally prepared to buy another car. As soon as we find one that we actually want to buy.

Other than that, I've been keeping very busy with school. I'm a big idiot who thought that taking Mircoeconomics and Macroeconomics (two classes that I loathe) during the same quarter would be smart. Riiight. So if you don't hear from me much, that is why. I've most likely passed out in a pile of books.
